Called like this because of some buildings in the city have been made of ashlar ( a white volcanic rock) making the city a magical place. This beautiful land is situated at 2328 m over the sea level, between the amazing andes, resulting a wonderful place to visit. The city perfectly mixes its breathtaking countryside with its amazing volcanoes and snowy mountains. However, one of the most attractive places to visit is the Misti volcano, the colca valley, the main square and St. Catalina’s Nunnery.


January 6th: Aniversary of Mollendo city. “La Bajada de Reyes” celebration (Epiphany) in Tiabaya.


February 2nd: Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria in Chivay.


February 3rd: Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria in the districts of Cayma and Characato. In Caraveli, the festival of the virgin of the Buen Paso. Celebrations lasts four days and fireworks are set off the night before, the same as roosters fight, bull fight and parade of Peruvian paso horses.


Holy Week: Religious activities are held throughout the department such as processions, spiritual retreat.
